This client commissioned a 14 inch wide bowl with mosaic detailing as a gift for his girlfriend. Him and his girlfriend went on vacation to Barcelona where they collected a variety of sea glass and rocks on a beach. When they came back to New York, he collected more rocks and sea glass from a beach in North Fork where they went on their first date. He wanted to give her a unique gift with sentimental value that represented the beginning of their relationship and how far they have come since.
To create this special piece for them, I first threw a 14 inch wide bowl made out of porcelain on the pottery wheel. After it was trimmed, fired, and finished with a black glaze, I started experimenting with different arrangements of sea glass and rocks. I created a variety of patterns organizing them by where they were found, their shape, colors, etc. I sent over many photos so he can review and decide which orientation of the sea glass and rocks he liked the most. Once that was decided, I carefully adhered all the pieces using E600. When everything was dried, I sealed the gaps and spaces between all of the rocks and sea glass with black grout. The final touch was a thin coat of baby oil to polish the pieces and make them shine.
