Initially in my journey through ceramics and pottery, I primarily focused on hand building sculptural ceramics. It was fascinating to see how using three very basic techniques like coil, slab, and pinch can transform into complex, bold forms with the imagination of the artist. This was my first experience creating three dimensional art, so it was a unique challenge to ensure all of the details are perfect while being viewed from different perspectives. I love balancing the delicate ceramic sculpture into gravity defying and precarious positions in my work.
While creating these sculptures through hand building, I have also been developing my skills on the pottery wheel. This is an entirely new way of working with clay, where instead of focusing on one project for months at a time, it’s more about embracing and experimenting with the fickle nature of clay and glaze. In the future, I plan on combining wheel thrown and hand building elements to find the balance between being detail oriented and having fun experimenting with the medium. It’s incredible exploring the wide range of forms and limits clay can be pushed to.
